Bhansali Productions are going to dish out to the viewers a chilling story of a Mafia queen and her struggle against all odds. “Gangubai Kathiawadi” is a Hindi language biographical crime film starring Alia Bhatt in the titular role. The film is an adaptation from a chapter in Hussain Zaidi’s book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’. 26 years old Alia Bhatt is very confident about her role as Gangubai which is quiet clear from the first look of the poster wherein she can be seen sitting on a chair, with a gun placed beside her. Shantanu Maheshwari could be seen sharing the big screen with Alia, as Ramnik Lal and Vijay Raaz would also be playing an important role. The film is set to release on 11 September, 2020.
This film is based on the life story of Gangubai Kathiawadi who was the undisputed Madam of a Kamathipura brothel. She belonged to a prestigious family of Kathiawad, Gujarat and reportedly fallen into love with a man named Ramnik Lal who sold her into prostitution. It is said that the struggles of the red light area of Mumbai made Gangubai a tough lady and eventually made her one of the most dreaded procurer or pimp. She was also the first of her kind to speak up about their agency and fought for the cause of girls who were unjustly sold into prostitution.
The film is written and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It has been produced by Bhansali himself and Jayantilal Gada under the banners of Bhansali Productions and Pen India Limited. The music of the film has been composed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and scored by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara. The first look poster has already been making its rounds in the social media channels and has sparked curiosity about this unheard story of Gangubai.
