The festival of Meena Sankranti is one of the major Indian festivals normally celebrated in the month of March. This festival is usually celebrated all over India. In some states such as Punjab, Kerala, Tamil Nadu the festival has great significance and is specifically celebrated during the beginning of each month by these states.
This auspicious festival has huge importance. It is the day when the sun transits from Pisces to Aries which means changes Rashi which is an important part of Hindu Panchang. People donate various things to needy people on this particular day. Depending on the transitions of sun from one particular phase to other, there are various sankrantis such as Roopa Sankranti, Dhanya Sankranti and Meena Sankranti. This festival Meena sankrantri falls on the twelfth and the final month of the Hindu calendar. It clearly indicates that the sun enters the Aries zodiac from the Pisces and this duration is considered auspicious to start up new events, such as new business or to shift to new house.
Donating things is the common feature on this special day and people donate various things to poor and to those who cannot afford. Some even offer land to the poor and other valuables to attain happiness in return. Temples are found occupied with huge crowd on this day and colorful diyas and flowers are used to decorate the temple as well as the idols of the goddess. People even enchant various shlokas and sing devotional songs in the temples offering their prayers to the lord.
