Dussehra is the festival which is celebrated by the Hindu faith people and it is celebrated just 20 days before the major festival called as Diwali. On Dussehra Lord Rama Killed the demon Ravana, thus ending the cruel regime of him on earth. The whole events the unfolded up to this event are written in the Holy Scripture called as Ramayana. All dates are calculated as per the Hindu calendar, which are done keeping position of moon.

Exactly 20 days after this, Diwali festival is celebrated and it is on Amavas night, when moon is not there.
Dusshera falls in the month of Ashwin, as per the Hindu calendar. As this is an auspicious day, celebrations are huge on this day. It is also said that, Ma Durga defeated the demon Mahishasur on this day, hence on the 10th day of 9 day long Maha Navaratri ends on it. Idols of Maa Durga are immersed in water also called as Visarjan. In different states of India, celebrating Dussehra festival is having different ways for it, but the unique thing is that, fun and happiness is common to all and that is what defines this festival
Preparation for Dussehra celebrations starts one month before as long effigies of Ravana, his son Meghnath and brother Kumbhkarna are made. In the evening, these effigies on the day of Dusshera are burned. This demarcates or picturize the event that took place when lord Rama Killed Ravana. In southern part of India, it is an auspicious day for starting any new work or education; hence children keep their books in front of the god. Huge fairs are held at various places where swings, food, sweets, dance, eating, toys related to lord Rama like arrow etc are present. In northern India, Jalebi or Burfi are brought from the market as it is considered auspicious to have sweets on this day.
In Karnataka, streets processions are something to go for and loud music accompanied my dance, songs etc is also there. In the state west Bengal Nine day long Maha Navratri ends on this day. But preparation for the same begins one month before in which idol of Maa Durga is made with the help of clay. At various places, some unique rituals like exchange of shami leaves and weapons are also considered very auspicious. This is because; Pandavas hid their weapons inside this tree when they went to Agayatvas.
