When is Diwali Festival

The festival of Diwali is a five day long affair marked by different events on each day. It begins from the Ashwin month and stretches to Kartik's early days. How is the date of Diwali determined? The Diwali date determined from the Luni Solar calendar that the Hindu religion follows. The celebration of Diwali begins on the day of Ashwin Amavasya but the main day of Diwali falls in Karthik. Usually this festival falls on the day when there is no moon, i.e., Amavasya day. It is said that the days that fall in the Ashwin month are darker therefore they are known to be in a Krishna Paksha. During the Kartik month the days are brighter therefore they are known to be in the Shukla Paksha.

If we take a look at the Gregorian calendar we will find that late Ashwin falls in the days between September - October and early Kartik falls in the days between October - November. The first day of festivity is marked by the celebration of Dhanteras and Yama Dvitya is celebrated on the last day. Diwali falls on the day of 15 Krishna Paksha Ashwin or 30 Ashwin. This day falls between the middle of October and the middle of November. Another way to know about the date on which Diwali would fall is by adding up 20 days to the day on which Dussehra was celebrated. Diwali date is exactly 20 days after Dussehra day. In Karnataka and Maharashtra Diwali festivities begin a day before on the day of Vasubaras and last for six days. While in the northern parts of India it is celebrated from the day of Lakshmi Puja. The different versions of the Hindu calendar in use in different region also play a role in this. Except the day of Diwali all the other days are named according to their designation in the Hindu calendar.
