Bhoramdeo Temple

Bhoramdeo temple is one of the most famous temples in the state of Chhattisgarh. The temple is renowned for its architectural grandeur and is known as ‘Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh’. It is situated in the Chaura village which is a few kilometres away from the Kabirdham district of Chhattisgarh and about 21 kilometres away from Kawardha town.

Bhoramdeo is famous for its sculptures, culture and scenic beauty and attracts thousands of tourists who come here from all over the world to enjoy the beauty of the place.

Bhoramdeo is  highly popular for its attractive 11th century Lord Shiva temple complex which lies in the banks of river Sakri. Bhoramdev is just one name out of many names of Lord Shiva. The sacred place of worship was constructed by King Ramchandra of Nag dynasty who married Princess Ambika Devi of Haiya dynasty.

Temple is situated in the charming surroundings of Maikal Mountains and lush green forests and the scenic surroundings add to the magnificence of the temple. The temple is engraved on the rocky stones and was constructed on the basis of Nagar style. Bhoramdeo temple reflects the architectural mastery of the ancient rulers of Chhattisgarh.

About Bhoramdeo Temple

The temple is divided into two parts namely Ishtika, the main temple, and the completely stone-carved area. The main shrine stands in front of a beautiful lake that adds to the charm of this place. The temple has been built on a five feet high platform and comprises of a Mandap,  Antral (Passage) and Garbhagriha  Amazing and attractive carvings and sculptures are engraved on the rock stone walls of the shrine.  There are three different entrance gates to this temple and the way through all the three gates reaches the pavilion. The main entrance faces east while the other two face south and north.  Four pillars can be seen in the centre of the pavilion. Beautiful and precise drawings can be seen on these pillars. A Shivling is placed in the Garbhagriha which is beautifully carved by the artists from the medieval period.  An idol of a five-headed Naag is also present in the centre of this temple. The top of Garbhagriha goes straight to the summit of the temple, known as the ”Kalash”. The east side Kalash is open in a circular form.

Near the entrance on the outer walls, the sculptures of Lord Vishnu and his other incarnations can be seen, besides those of Shiva, Ganesha etc. The main idols in the temple are those of Uma-Maheswar, Natraj, Narsimha, Vaman, Krishna, Surya, Kaal, Bhairava, Nritya Ganesh, Kartikeya, Tandul, Shivgang, Chamunda, Ambika, Sapta-Matrika and Laxmi-Narayan. The outer walls of the temple are embellished with panels of exquisite sculptures.

Several festivals are celebrated in this temple. Bhoramdeo festival is organised in the month of March every year. This festival which is celebrated with great grandeur attracts large number of visitors.

How to reach Bhoramdeo temple

Raipur which is 134 kms from Bhoramdeo temple is the nearest airport. It is well connected with Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ranchi etc. Raipur is the nearest Railway station which falls on the Bombay-Howrah main line. Regular Buses ply from Raipur, Rajnandgaon and Jabalpur to Kawardha. Taxis are also available from Kawardha.
