Tiruchirappalli also popularly known as Trichy is situated in the southern state of Tamilnadu. Trichy or Tiruchirappalli is the fourth largest city in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu which is situated on the banks of the River Cauvery.

It was once the citadel of the mighty Cholas but later fell to the Pallavas. From them it was occupied by the Pandyas until the 10th century when it was again regained by the Cholas. In the 12 the century Vijayanagar kings of Hampi took control from the Cholas. Later in 1565, Trichy came under the rule of the Nayaks of Madurai and subsequently ruled by the Marathas, the Nawabs of Carnatic, the French, and finally the British. But it was under the Nayaks of Madurai that Trichy grew in its glory.

Rock Fort Temple

This rocky outcrop is situated on the banks of the river Cauvery and perched at an altitude of 83 m above sea level. This is believed to be among the oldest rocks in the world dating back to 3800 million years. Halfway up the rock is the Sri Thayumanaswamy Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.  Below the Shiva temple one can also find two Pallava cave temples with beautiful sculptures. On top of the rock is the Uchipillaiyar koil, a temple dedicated to Lord Vingayaka. From here one can get a panoramic view of the surrounding plains and Cauvery River.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple (Srirangam)

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is situated 7 km north of the city. This 13th century temple is the largest temple in the world dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is built on an island with waters of river Cauvery on one inside and its tributary Kollidam on the other. The temple is famous for its architectural splendour comprising of seven rectangular walled courtyards, 21 gopuram of which the largest is the Rajagopuram is 72m high and has 13 tires.

Jambukeswar Temple

It is situated just 2 km east of Srirangam and dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that an elephant had worshipped Lord Siva here under the jambu tree. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture the temple houses five concentric walls and seven gopurams and lingam is partially submerged by water.

Viralimalai

This is a small town situated about 30 km from Tiruchirappalli and is famous for Viralimalai Murugan Temple. The temple lies on the Viralimalai hill. It is also has a peacock sanctuary.

Thanjavur

Thanjavur is situated 54 km from Trichy which is famous for its Brahadeeswarar temple.
