The founders of Banaras Hindu University, previously Central Hindu University, are Madan Mohan Malviya, Maharaja of Darbhanga Rameshwar Singh, Sundar Lal, and Annie Besant. The university was started in 1916 with more than 30,000 students. The main campus area of the university is 1,300 acres and is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Its second campus over 2700 acres of land is situated at Barkachha. The six institutes that come under the university are the Indian Institute of Technology(BHU)Varanasi, Institute of Science, Institute of Agricultural Science, Institute of Medical Science, Institute of Environmental & Sustainable Development, and Institute of Management Studies. The university is recognized by UGC, AIU, and placed at 3rd ranked in Indian ranking by NIRF in 2018. The international rank was 801-1000 in the QS World ranking of 2018.

The university provides various courses in UG, PG, Diploma, PG Diploma, Ph.D., and M.Phil programs.

Eligibility Criteria
- The entrance exam for UG courses is the Undergraduate Entrance Test(UET)
- The entrance exam for PU is the Postgraduate Entrance Test(PET)
- The entrance exam for Ph.D. and M.Phil is Research Entrance Exam
- The entrance exam for MBBS and BDS is NEET
Reservation
- The university gives 15% and 7.5% reservation in seats for the students belonging to SC/ST caste.
- 27% of reservations are provided to the Other Backward Class (OBC) students.
- 3% of seats are reserved for physically disabled students.
- The university provides 15% reservation in seats to female candidates in M.P.Ed and 15% are reserved for the students of permanent employees in the university.
Scholarship
- The university provides free meals to the poor students and 5000 INR per year to the blind candidates.
- 2000 INR per year is provided to the students belonging to poor families.
- 5000 INR is provided to first rank students and 300 INR for second rank students.
- A scholarship of 4000 INR is provided to the physically disabled candidates.
