The University of Madras (informally known as Madras University) is a public state university in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The university was established in 1857. It is one of the oldest and premier universities in India. The university was incorporated by an act of the Legislative Council of India. It is a collegiate research university and has six campuses in the city of Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, Taramani, Maduravoyal and Chetpet. The college has 68 showing and exploration offices assembled under 18 schools, covering dialects, humanities, science, engineering and prescription. The university is awarded a “five star” accredition by the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) and also given the status of 'University with Potential for Excellence' by the University Grants Commission.
The principal ever interest for advanced education in Madras Presidency was given in an open location to Lord John Elphinstone, Governor of Madras, marked by 70,000 occupants when the Governor in Council was pondering "some successful and liberal measures for the foundation of an enhanced arrangement of national training." This open appeal, which was exhibited by the Advocate General Mr. As per this, Lord Elphinstone advanced an arrangement for the foundation of a focal university establishment or a "college." This college had twin divisions – a secondary school for the development of English writing, territorial dialect, reasoning and science, and a school for direction in the higher limbs of writing, logic and science.
Madras University was the initiative of the British Government in 1840 then after 14 years, the government of India approved and permitted to established the Madras university in 1857 in Navalar Nagar, Chepauk, Triplicane, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The UGC recognized university was set up on the model of London University to facilitate higher studies and research activities in the field of Arts, Humanities, Science, Management, and Technology. This university currently stands at 22nd position by NIRF 2020 and the Ministry of Human Resources and Development. It is one of the oldest universities in the country that has achieved an ‘A’ rating by the NAAC. Madras University has been playing a vital role in providing higher education in the field of Management, Technology, Language, etc.

Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates looking for admission to the PG and Doctoral program must have completed graduation and master’s degree from a UGC recognized university.
- Admission to MBA and MCA is granted on the valid score in TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test)
- Admission to M.Tech is based on the qualified marks in the GATE.
