In Andhra Pradesh State, in total there are five major airports and brief information about them is available below:
- Rajiv Gandhi International Airport - Code HYD.
- Tirupati Airport - Code TIR
- Rajahmundry Airport - Code RJA
- Vijayawada Airport -Code VGA
- Vishakhapatnam Airport - Code VTZ
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport: This is the biggest airport in the Andhra Pradesh and has been constructed by the GMR construction company. Around 22 KM from the Hyderabad, a place called as the Shamshabad is there and this airport is located at this location. In the year 2008, the renovation of this airport started and now it is fully fledged working. There are two terminals at this airport. One is for the domestic operations and other one for the international one. With road and train, this air strip enjoys a good connectivity and has all the modern amenities that an airport should have.
Tirupati Airport: This airport is situated around 14 Km away from the Trimula city in the east direction. This airport till now caters only the domestic flights, but by the year 2013, it will have international flights also, with night landing facilities too. Car, private taxis, shuttle bus service are quite common here and are the main mode of transportation to the airport. It spreads in approx area of 700 to 800 acres of land. In terms of railway connectivity, a railway station is located within 14 Km perimeter. Inside the airport, you have ample amount of facilities for the passengers like shops, food courts etc.
Rajahmundry Airport: Madhurapudi is the place where this airport is located. But most of the times it is used by the ONGC helicopters for the exploration purposes. And this also caters some of the commercial flights of Jet Airways and Spicejet. People belonging to the areas like Kakinada use this airport to reach major cities like Chennai, Mumbai etc. Expansion plan for this airport is under its way.
Vijayawada Airport: Because of its tourist spot importance, it is well connected by the major fliers in India from major cities across the nation. This Airport is located near the Gannavaram area of the Andhra Pradesh. Only one terminal is there to accommodate the needs of the domestic passengers. Also modern facilities like X Ray scanner machines, Trolleys, lost and found baggage facility are available. Medical facilities for the passengers like escalators, food courts etc are also available here.
Vishakhapatnam Airport: Vishakhapatnam is among the big airports in the Andhra Pradesh state. Its Runway is so big that it can have Boeing 747 land on it. The renovation work that finished in the year 2009, made it compatible enough to accommodate more flights, with night landing facilities too. It has one domestic terminal for the lights and one cargo terminal to handle the cargo operation. All facilities that a domestic airport should have like baggage handling, medical facilities etc, all are available here. In the coming future it may happen that, this airport will become an international one also, because you have the entire desired infrastructure here for having that facility.
