The district of Lohit is the third most populated district of the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The headquarters of the administrative department of the district is located in the city of Tezu. The district was formerly known as The Mishmi Hills District. Later the name was changed to Lohit District after the River Lohit that flows through the heart of the district. The size of the Lohit district was reduced considerably when the district of Anjaw was carved out of its lands. The district of Lohit occupies an area of 11402 sq km with a population that amounts up to 145538 individuals. The population density of the district is 28 persons per sq km. Lohit District gives home to tribes like Adi, Khampti, Ahom, Deori, Chakma, etc. The endangered language of Galo is spoken by a few people in the district. The district is famous all over India for the rare and beautiful flora and fauna that it has. This attracts a lot of tourists to the district.
