Alappuzha district is one of the 14 districts that make up the state of Kerala. The district was initially known as Alleppey district when it was created in the year 1957. The official name of the district was changed in the year of 1990 to Alappuzha district. In the past the region of the district was initially ruled by Raja Kesavadas. The region is also known as the Rice Bowl of the state of Kerala. The region was also ruled by the Chera Dynasty. Before the British came to India the region was under the Portuguese which later succeeded by the Dutch. The district of Alappuzha covers a land area of approximately 1413 sq km. The population that the district holds within itself is about 21 lacs individuals in it. The density of the population of the district is as high as 1501 individuals per sq km. The district has 1100 females when compared to 1000 males.
