The district of Thrissur is one of the extremely important districts of the state of Kerala. The district is of utmost importance to the state of Kerala because of the fact that the district produces the highest amount of revenue for the state. The district was created in the year 1949. The main centre for the administration of Thrissur is the city of Thrissur itself. The district gets its name from the Malayalam word ’Thiru – Shive – Perur’ which means ‘The City with the name of Lord Shiva’. The district was also known as Kailasam in the past. The district of Thrissur covers an area of 3032 sq km with a population that amounts up to 31 lacs individuals approximately. The district has a density of population around 1026 inhabitants per sq km. Just like the other districts of Kerala, the district has an extremely good literacy rate and 1109 females per 1000 males. The district is famous for it being the powerhouse of industry in Kerala.
