The district of Jarsuguda has the city of Jarsuguda as its main centre for the control of all the administrative works. The district was one of the important air base locations for the British Army during the Second World War. The district is one of the highly resourceful districts of the state of Orissa. The district has immense amount of Coal deposits in the land and these deposits of coal are responsible for the overall industrial development of the state of Orissa.The district also has the oldest coal mines of India. Brajrajnagar is one of the largest industrial towns of the district. The district of Jharsuguda covers a land area of approximately about 2114 sq km with a population of about 5.7 lacs individuals. The district has a population density of 274 people per sq km. In spite of the huge mineral deposits, the district is one of the 250 most backward districts of India.
