The district of Karnal is that district of Haryana which has gone through the most reorganisation in case of the area concerned. The district of Karnal is a part of the Rhotak division. The Karnal Town is the main administrative centre of the district. The district of Karnal was one of the first 7 districts of Haryana. The district of Kurukshetra was carved of later in the year 1973, the district of Kaithal in the year 1989. Panipat district was interestingly merged into Karnal District in 1991 only to be separated again in 1992. The district is named after the legendary figure of ‘Karna’ from the Mahabharata. The whole of the Karnal district is located amidst the Indus – Ganges plains making the land extremely suitable for agriculture. The whole area is extremely well irrigated with canals. The district covers a land area of 1967 sq km with a population that approximately amounts up to 15 lacs people. The density of population of the district is around 598 individuals per sq km.
