The district of Kurukshetra is one of the extremely important and sacred regions for the Hindus. The district holds the ground where the epic battle of the Mahabharata was fought between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. The region is referred to as the ‘Land of the Kurus’ and thus the name Kurukshetra. The district of Kurukshetra came into being in the year 1973 when land was scrapped off the district of Karnal. The district of Kurukshetra also lost some land to Kaithal and Yamunanagar districts later owing to the State Reorganising act. The district of Kurukshetra covers an approximate land area of 1530 sq km with a population that amounts up to 9.6 lacs individuals. The density of population of the district is around 630 people per sq km. The district has quite a few Sikhs mixed in its population due to the closeness that the Punjab Border has with the district.
