The district of Mahendragarh is one of the very few districts of the Republic of India in which the main administrative city and the city after which the district is named in different. The district has its main administrative centre in the city of Narnaul. The district of Mahendragarh was previously known as Kanaud after the community of Kanaudia Brahmins that lived in the region. The district was renamed as Mahendragarh by the ruler of the region of Patiala in the year 1861 after the name of his own son ’Mahendra’. The district covers a land area of around 1900 sq km with a population that approximately amounts up to 9.2 lacs individuals. The density of the population of the region is around 485 people per sq km. The district has been listed in the list of the 250 most backward districts of India and is extremely dependent on the funds that are being given to them from the government of India.
