The district is located in the northern part of the northern state of Punjab. The district was a part of the Lahore Division during the Rule of the British Forces in India. The district was made a part of the Indian contingent during the division of India and Pakistan after Independence. The district is also very important to the history of India as it played a very significant role in its independence. The district of Amritsar covers a land area of approximately about 5056 sq km with a population of around about 24.9 lacs individuals out of which more that 60% are Sikhs. The density of population of the district of Amritsar is approximately around about 932 people per sq km. The district shares international borders with Pakistan.
