The district of Chitrakoot is one of the many districts which make up the whole northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The district is a part of the Chitrakoot division of the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district has its main administrative centre in the historical city of Chitrakoot. The district of Chitrakoot came into being in the year 1997 when land was carved out of the district of Banda. Initially the district was named as Chhatrapati Shahuji district which was later renamed with the present name in the year 1998. The district of Chitrakoot covers a land area of approximately about 345291 sq km with a population of about 9.9 lacs individuals. The district of Chitrakoot has a population density of approximately about 315 people per sq km. The district of Chitrakoot is a part of the list of the 250 most backward districts of Indian Republic which receives funds from the Government of India.
