The district of Gorakhpur is one of the important administrative districts of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The district of Gorakhpur has the main centre for the control of administration in the city of Gorakhpur itself. The district was handed over to the British East India Company by the then Nawab of Awadh in the year of 1801 which literally started the British rampage in India. The district was divided in the year 1865 which resulted in the creation of the district of Basti. The district is a main part of the Gorakhpur division. The district of Gorakhpur covers a land area of approximately about 3320 sq km with a population of approximately about 44.3 lacs individuals. The district of Gorakhpur has a population density of approximately 1336 people per sq km. The district is one of the 250 most backward districts of the Republic of India.
