Anantapuram District formerly known as Anantapur is the largest district of the state of Andhra Pradesh. The size of the district is very much the same as that of the Shikoku island of Japan. Anantapuram is bounded by Kurnool, Kadapa, Chitoor districts. Karnataka also forms a boundary the the district. The head Quarters of the district is Anantapur city. The district is primarily covered by undulated and rugged terrain. Interestingly there are 6 rivers that flow through this district. Anantapuram receives extremely low rainfall making it one of the driest districts of the region. As a result of the low rainfall, not a lot of crops are grown in this region! Few crops that grow in this region are groundnut, sunflower, cotton, maize, etc. Anantapuram houses around 40 lacs individuals. The literacy rate o0f the district is also very low. According to the Government of India release, Anantapuram is in the list of the 250 most backward districts of the country out of a total of 640 districts.
