The district of Vizianagaram is also known as the Vijayanagaram district. It is located in the northern coastal region of Andhra Pradesh. The main administrative city of Vizianagaram district is the city of Vizianagaram itself. The district came into being in the year of 1979. The name is derived from two words, Vijaya meaning ‘Victory’ and Nagaram meaning ‘City’ in Telugu language. The district is the least populated district of Andhra Pradesh. In the medieval times, the district of Vizianagaram was a part of the Kingdom of Kalinga, which was later ruled by the Mauryas, Cholas, Marathas, etc. The district only spans up to an Area of 6539 sq km, holding a population of 2342868 individuals in its boundaries. The district has its prime occupation as Agriculture. The main food crops of the district are Paddy, Ragi, Bajra, pulses, cotton, etc. Even the industries that are found in this district are dependent on the agricultural production of the district. Though the district is not in the list of most backward districts, the literacy rate of the region is quite low.
