West Godavari District has its centre if administration in the city of Eluru. West Godavari District is located amidst the basin region of the two rivers: Krishna and Godavari. The district is famous for its connections with Buddhism. It was a part of the lower Kalinga Empire that changed the course of religion expansion in the region. The land was later ruled by the Chalukyas and many others. Godavari District was divided which led to the formation of East Godavari District and West Godavari District in the year 1921.
