The district of Srikakulam is located at the extreme north – east direction of Andhra Pradesh. Formerly the district was known as Chicacole district. The district has a land area of 5837 sq km, out of which the major part is under the hills of the Eastern Ghats. The district is bordered by Viziangaram district, the Bay of Bengal of the state of Orissa. In accordance with its small size, the district also houses a population of 26 lacs which makes it the 3rd least populated district of Andhra Pradesh. The districts above Srikakulam are Viziangaram and Nizamabad.
Due to the fact that most of the district is under the hilly regions, the district is not that much agriculturally developed. Interestingly, there are 9 rivers that flow through the district into the Bay of Bengal. They are: Nagavali, Vamsadhara, Mahendratanaya, Champavati, Bahuda, Kumbhikota Gedda, Suvarnamukhi, Vegavati, Gomukhi. The district is also famous for its educational institutes that range from Engineering to Medical colleges. The district also has quite good tourism prospects as it has many historical places, Temples and some exotic beaches.
