The district of Panchmahal is located in the eastern region of the state of Gujarat. The district derives its name from the term ‘Panch Mahals’ which precisely refers to the 5 Tehsils or the Talukas that the district has: namely Godhra, Dahod, Halol, Kalol, Jhalod. The district is bordered by the districts of Dahod, Vadodara, Kheda,Sabarkantha and the district of Banswara of Rajasthan. The district has its history linked to the Rajputs and the Solankis. The region was ruled by Allauddin Khilji till the year of 1484. The headquarters of the region of Panchmahal is Godhra. The district occupies an area of approximately 5000+ sq km. The population that lives in the district is approximately equal to 23 lacs with a population density of 458 individuals per sq km. The district of Panchmahal is not as developed as the majority of the other districts of Gujarat. The district is listed in the list of 250 most backward districts of India.
