The district of Nagapattinam is one of the very important coastal districts of the state of Tamil Nadu. The district has the main administrative centre in the city of Nagapattinam itself for the control of the administrative works. The past of the district finds itself made up of refugees from the country of Sri Lanka. During the Medieval Times, the district was ruled by the Cholas. The city of Nagapattinam and the other parts of the district have enough proofs to link the land to the communities of the Sangam period. Portuguese were the first foreigners ti invade the land and establish trade relations with India. The district of Nagapattinam covers a total land area of approximately around 2715 sq km with a population of about 16.1 lacs individuals. The density of population of the district of Nagapattinam is approximately around 548 people per sq km. The district is a part of the list of the 250 most backward districts of India. In the year 2004, the district was hit by Tsunami waves that lead to massive mass destruction.
