The centrally located district of Tiruchirappalli is one of the districts that are situated along the banks of the River Cauveri. The district has its main headquarters in the city of Tiruchirappalli which is also known as Trichy. The district was a part of the Madras Presidency during the rule of the British Forces in India. The district was previously known as Trichinopoly which had its name changed later in the year 1947 right after the independence of India. The district is bordered by the districts of Perambalur, Namakkal, Salem, Arivalur, Thanjavur, Madurai, Sivaganga, Karur, Dindigul and Pudukottai. The district has a land area of approximately around about 4404 sq km with a population density of approximately around 602 people per sq km. The district of Tiruchirappalli has a population of 27.1 lacs living in the total area of the district. The main language of the people of the district is Tamil which is spoken by more than 85% of the people.
