The district of Viluppuram is one of those districts located in the northern part of the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The district has its main administrative centre in the city of Vilippuram itself. The district of Viluppuram came into being in the year 1993 when the district was carved out of the district of South Arcot. The district and the areas near to the district were ruled by the rulers of the Chola Dynasty which later on passed on to the Vijayanagara Empire. The flow of power followed until the British forces annexed the region and created the Madras Presidency. The district is the largest district of the state of Tamil Nadu with a land area of approximately around 7217 sq km. The population of the district is approximately around 34.6 lacs individuals with a density of around about 482 people per sq km. The district of Viluppuram is a part of the 250 most backward districts of India.
