The district of Tirunelveli is located along the southern part of the state of Tamil Nadu as well as the southern part of the Indian Peninsula. The district has its main centre for administration in the city of Tirunelveli itself. The district came into being in the year 1970 under the rule of the British East India Company. The district was later divided into the districts of Toothukudi district and some parts of the districts of Virudhanagar. In spite of the division, the district is the second largest district of the state of Tamil Nadu. The district of Tirunelveli has a total area of approximately around 6823 sq km with a population of about 30.7 lacs individuals. The density of population for the district of Tirunelveli is approximately around about 410 people per sq km. The district is one of the prime agrarian regions of the state of Tamil Nadu with it being one of the largest producers of Rice and Banana.
