The Chamarajanagara District is located in the southern most part of the state of Karnataka. The district has its main administrative centre in the city of Chamarajanagara itself. The district was formerly a part of the Mysore district and was later scrapped out of it to be listed as an independent district in the year 1998. The Chamarajanagara District was previously also known as the Arikottara district. The district is bordered by the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the districts of Bangalore, Mysore and Mandya. The district also has the beautiful Nilgiri Hills to its one side. The Chamarajanagara District covers a land area of around 5104 sq km with a population of about 10.2 lacs individuals. The density of population of the region is approximately around 200 people per sq km. The district has quite a large area under the forest cover. This was the region where the Gangster named Veerappan assassinated over a 100 police officers.
