The district of Chitradurga is one of the main administrative districts of the state of Karnataka. The district has its main centre of administration in the city of Chitradurga itself. The name of the district and the town comes from a hill which is lofty and umbrella shaped, named Chitrakaldurgaan. The district is located in the river basin of Vedavati with the River Tungabhadra flowing through the south – west region. The district was under the rule of the legendary Mauryan ruler Ashoka. After the Mauryan Emplrire, the region was ruled by Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas and CHalukyas. The whole of the district is literally a hilly area with quite a few numbers of forts and palaces. The district was a hotspot of tourism in the past because of the scenic beauty that it provides. The district covers a land area of around 8428 sq km with a population of around 16.6 lacs individuals. The population density of the region is around about 198 people per sq km.
