Uttara Kannada

The district of Uttar Kannada is also known as North Kanara or North Canara. The district is a part of the Konkan region. The district is bordered by the districts of Belgaum, Dharwad, Haveri, Shimoga and Udupi. The district of Uttar Kannada is also bordered by Arabian Sea and the state of Goa. The district has its main administrative centre in the city of Karwar. The region of Uttar Kannada was an apart of the Kadamba kingdom which rolled on to the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara Empire. The land was also invaded by the Portuguese before they lost to the English. The Western Ghats run through the district from north to south. The district is basically dependent on Agriculture and small – scale industries to maintain their economy. The district has an area of 10263 sq km with a population of around about 14.3 lacs individuals. The district has a population density of about 140 people per sq km.
