The district of Gulbarga is one of the 30 districts that make up the state of Karnataka. The district has its main centre of administration in the city of Gulbarga itself. The district of Gulbarga is bordered by the states of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. The region was developed by the Bahamani Kings and during the 14th century this became their capital. Later, the region was also ruled by the Chalukyas and the Rashtrakutas. During the later part of the medieval period, the district and the region around it was under rule of the Delhi Sultanate. The district of Gulbarga occupies an area of around 11000 sq km approximately. The district has a population of around 25.6 lacs individuals with a population density of approximately 233 people per sq km. The districts is listed as one of the 250 most backward districts of India which depends a lot on the funds given by the government of India.
