The district of Chikkamagaluru is the first place on Indian soil where coffee was first planted in the year 1670. The mountains that are a part of the district of Chikkamagaluru are famous for its coffee plantations. The district of Chikkamagaluru gets its name from the city of Chikkamagaluru which is also the main centre of administration for the district. During the medieval times, the district was ruled by the Hoysala Rulers. After Independence the district shot into fame when the former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi stood from the region and won the Lok Sabha Elections. Thje district of Chikkamagaluru borders the districts of Shimoga, Davangere, Tumkur, Chitradurga and Udupi. The area of land that comes under the administration of the districts is 7200 sq km with a population of about 11.3 lacs. The density of population of the region is approximately around 158 people per sq km. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of the districts with Coffee, Gram, Oil Seeds, etc being its main products.
