The district of Udupi is one of the 30 districts that make up the state of Karnataka. The district came into being in the year 1997 when land was separated from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi was formed.The district is bordered by the districts of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Shivamoga, Chikamagalur and the Arabian Sea. The district is also famous for the extremely different and innovative cuisine that it has. The district has its main administrative centre in the city of Udupi itself. The district completely depends on Agriculture, Horticulture and many small scale industries to maintain their economy. The district does not have any large scale industries. The district of Udupi covers a land area of 3874 sq km with a population of about 11.7 lacs. The density of population of the people is approximately around 304 people per sq km. Astonishingly, the district has a male to female ration of more than one.
