The district on Bankura is one of the seven districts that is a part of the Nurdwan Division. The district has its main centre for administration in the city of Bankura which is from where the district gets its name. The district of Bankura was created in the year 1881 after the Malla Kingdom that ruled the region was captured by the British East India Company in the year 1765. The region around the district is of high importance when relating to the later stages of the medieval era and the early stages of the British Rule in India. The district is supposed to be a link between the two physical features of the Gangetic plains and the Chotta Nagpur Plateau. The district also has evidences of Chalcolithic people living in the region. The land area that the district of Bankura covers is approximately around 6882 sq km with a population of approximately 35 lacs individuals. The district is among the list of the 250 most backward district of the Republic of India.
