The district of Birbhum is one of the most important districts of the state of West Bengal. The district is a part of the group of districts that takes active participation in the deduction of the administrative policies of the state of West Bengal. The Headquarters of the district of Birbhum is located in the city of Siuri. The district has a lot to do with the freedom fight that Bengal put up against the British forces. That is where the district gets its name; Birbhum: ‘Bir’ meaning brave and Bhum referring to Bhoomi meaning land. Thus the name means the Land of the Braves. The district has a complete unique kind of soil that is red in colour. The region is also famous for its cultural heritage which is very much different from the other districts of Bengal. The district has a land area of 4545 sq km with a population that amounts up to 35 lacs people approximately. Not many heavy industries are found in this region. The economy of the district is primarily dependent on the cottage industries out of which the Terracotta toy making industry is of prime importance.
