The district of South 24 Parganas is undoubtedly the most important administrative district for the state of West Bengal. The district has its main centre for administration at Alipore which also has a lot of important buildings that literally govern the whole state of Bengal. The district is highly urbanised and is one of the most crowded regions of West Bengal. The region has seen many uprising against the East India Company forces along with the rest of Bengal. Along with this, the district also saw the periods when the city of Kolkata and its nearby regions were tormented by the Naxalites. The district covers a land area of approximately 1000 sq km with a population of 81 lacs individuals approximately. The density of population of the district is about 800 people. The district is the proud owner of The Suderban national reserve which still has reserves of the endangered species of the Royal Bengal Tiger.
