The district of Uttar Dinajpur is one of the most important districts pertaining to administration of the state of West Bengal. The district was created in the year 1992 when the district of West Dinajpur was dissolved. The original district was Dinajpur which had been divided into East Dinajpur and West Dinajpur. This was later redesigned into Uttar Dinajpur and Dakkshin Dinajpur. The district of Uttar Dinajpur is bordered by the districts of Maldah, Dakshin Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. The district is also bordered by Bangladesh and the state of Bihar.
The district of Uttar Dinajpur has an area of 3142 sq km under its belt with a population of about 30 lacs individuals and a density of population around 950 people per sq km. The district has literally a flat topography which makes its better for agriculture. The main agricultural crops of the district are paddy and jute. The district is listed as one of the 250 most backward districts of India.
