The district of Purba Medinipur is one of the important districts to the state of West Bengal when it comes to the administrative department. The district came into its existence in the year 2002 when the district of Medinipur was divided into two parts of Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur. The main centre that controls the administration of the district is the city of Tamluk. The district is bordered by Orissa, Paschim Medinipur, Howrah, and South 24 Parganas. The river Hoogly flows through the district straight into the Bay of Bengal. The land area of the district is approximately about 4714 sq km with a population that amounts up to 50.1 lacs individuals per sq km.
