West Bengal

Darjiling

The district is literally nestled among the beautiful foothills of The Great Himalayas. The district is the northern most district of the state of West Bengal.  The history of Darjeeling does not have a lot to offer other that some petty fights between the Gorkhas and the other Tribal leaders of the region in the past. The region was under the rule of the British East India Company and was used as a spot of tourism by them. The district of Darjeeling gets its name from two Tibetan words that refer to the Land of Thunder bolts. The land of Darjeeling is blessed with the waters of the Teesta River which flows through the heartland of the district. The district is in the second position when it comes from the section of the least populated districts at just 18.4 lacs individuals approximately. Majority of the population of the region includes tribal people from the Himalayas like the Gorkhas, The Sherpas, etc.
