The district of Murshidabad is one of the extremely significant districts in the history of the state of West Bengal. The district has its headquarters in the city of Murshidabad itself. The district is located along the banks of River Bhagirathi which is one of the many tributaries of the Great Ganges. The district of Murshidabad was formed under the British rule when it was a part of the Bengal Residency. The district was the last place in Bengal which was under self rule under the Nawab after the British East India Company has literally annexed the whole of Bengal. The district of Murshidabad has an area of 2143 sq km under its administration. The population of the district is approximately 71 lacs individuals with a density of population 1344 individuals per sq km. The district is of great importance to the state because of the cultural heritage that it holds within itself. The district has many spots for the tourists and a lot of revenue is also collected from the tourism that the district supports.
