The district of Barddhaman is also known as Burdwan among the people of the state of West Bengal. The district has the city of Barddhaman as its main centre for administration. The district has existed since the times when the British ruled India. It was the Englishmen who called the region as Burdwan and thus the name Burdwan. The district had actively participated in all the political and fights for freedom along with the other districts of Bengal. The district is one of the best places when it comes to education in West Bengal. The National Institute of Technology is located in Barddhaman. There are two main rivers that flow through the region of the district: River Damodar and River Banka. The main occupation of the people of Barddhaman is agriculture which literally supports the livelihood of the people living in the district.
