The district of Hoogly gets its name from the River Hoogly that flows through the mainland of the district. The other names that are more often than not used for the district include Hugli and Hoogli. The main centre for administration of the district is the city of Hoogly itself which is an inland River Port that is just at a distance of 40 km from the state capital of Kolkata. The district was the prime centre for trade and travelling by sea during the British Rule. The district is literally the flattest land that is found in the whole of India. The district is bordered by the districts of Howrah, Kolkata, Barddhaman and Bankura. The district is prone to floods during the rainy season because of the River Hoogly and River Damodar that flows through it. The district has a population of 55 lacs approximately with a density around 1750 people. The district is primarily based on agriculture with Jute being the highest grosser.
