The district of Amravati is one of the most important administrative districts of the state of Maharashtra. The district is bordered by the districts of Nagpur, Yavatmal, Wardha, Akola, Buldhana and Washim. The district is also bordered by the state of Madhya Pradesh. The district of Amravati was previously a part of the Berar Province that was given to the British East India Company by the Nizam under a peace treaty. After Independence the district was known as East Berar district which was later named as Amravati district. The district of Amravati has agriculture as the main occupation of the local people. The district is famous for the red chilli that it produces. The district of Amravati covers a land area of approximately about 12235 sq km with a population of 28.8 lacs individuals residing in it. The population density of the district is approximately around 237 people per sq km. The district is a part of the list of 250 most backward districts of India.
