The district of Dhule is one of the important rural districts of the state of Maharashtra. The district has its main centre for administration in the city of Dhule itself. The district is one of those very few districts of Central India which are not dependent on the monsoon rains for irrigation. The district of Dhule was one large district at a time which comprised of large Tribal lands. In the year 1988 the district was parted into two distinct districts; Dhule and Nandurbar. The district of Nandurbar had most of the Tribal lands. The district of Dhule covers a land area o of approximately around 7188 sq km with a population of approximately 20.4 lacs individuals. The district has a population density of approximately 285 people per sq km. The district is primarily dependent on Agriculture as its main occupation. The district is a part of the 250 most backward districts of India.
