The district of Jalgaon was previously also known as the East Khandesh district. Before being divided, the district was known as the Khandesh district till the year 1960. The district is bordered by the districts of Buldhana, Aurangabad, Jalna, Dhula and Nasik. The district also has a border with the state of Madhya Pradesh. The district was ruled by a lesser known Farugi dynasty for a very long period of time of over 200 years. The region was annexed by the British in the middle part of the 18th century. The district of Jalgaon covers a huge area of approximately 11765 sq km with a population of around about 42.2 lacs people. The district has a population density of 359 individual per sq km. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of the district of Jalgaon. The district is the no. 1 ranked district in the production of Bananas along with the cotton, wheat, sugarcane that it produces.
