The district of Sindhudurg is named after a fort of the legendary Maratha king Shivaji, which is literally built along the sea on an island named Malvan. The name of the districts means ‘Foart on sea’. The district of Sindhudurg is located along the coastel part of the state of Maharashtra. The district was previously a part of the Ratnagiri district. The district came into being after it was split off from Ratnagiri district. The district has its main administrative centre in the city of Oros. The district of Sindhudurg covers a land area of approximately 5207 sq km with a population of about 8.4 lacs individuals. The district has a population density of 163 people per sq km of the area. The district is the least populated district of the state of Maharashtra. The district is primarily an agriculture based district with major crops as Coconut, Mango, etc. The district also has a well defined fishery system.
