The district of Yavatmal is one of the most important districts of the state of Maharashtra. The district is also known as ‘Yeotmal’ among the local people of the region. The district is located in the central – eastern part of the state partially falling into the virtual Vidarbha land. The district was a part of the Berar province of India of the past. The land was under the rule on the great Mauryan king Ashoka which is well understood by the stupas and the inscriptions found in many temples of the region. The district has its Headquarters in the city of Yavatmal itself.
The district of Yavatmal covers a land area of approximately around 13605 sq km with a population of about 27.7 lacs individuals. The district has a population density of 204 people living in per sq km of the land area. The district produces good quantities of Jowar and Cotton which are considered as the main agricultural productions of the district. The district is listed as one of the 250 most backward districts of India.
