The district of Khargone was previously known as the West Nimar District. The district is located in the Nimar region and is an extremely important part of the Indore division. The district has its main administrative centre in the city of Khargone itself. The district has had a long and interesting past. The region along the area of the district was under the Malwa and the Peshwa sultanate. After the independence, it was called the West Nimar District which was later divided into Khargone and Barwani district in the year 1998. The district of Khargone covers a land area of approximately 8030 sq km with a population of 18.7 lacs individuals. The density of population of the district is around about 233 people per sq km. The district is not one of the developed districts of Madhya Pradesh as it is a part of the 250 most backward districts of India. The district depends on the funds from Backward Regions Grant Fund Program conducted by the Government of India.
