The district is a part of the state of Madhya Pradesh which is located in the central part of India. The district has its main centre of administration in the city of Mandsaur itself. The district is located in the Malwa plateau region with a border with the state of Rajasthan. The district of Mandsaur is a part of the Ujjain Division. The district is also bordered by the districts of Neemuch and Ratlam. Just like all the other districts of the state of Madhya Pradesh, the district of Mabndsaur has quite a dry climate with some amount of rainfall in the monsoon season. The district of Mandsaur covers an area of 9791 sq km with the population of 13.3 lacs individuals. The district has a population density of 242 people per sq km. The district is not that greatly developed in either agriculture or in industry. The district is the largest producer of Opium and at the same time has many small scale industries related to the production of slate chalk.
